LG UltraFine 5K: Problems fixed with new version of the monitor

The shielding problems with the LG UltraFine 5K monitor has apparently corrected.

LG UltraFine 5K
9to5Mac has tried the revised version and could not reproduce the previously encountered problems by spark influences and also with the use of the Thunderbolt 3 cable. Buyers should pay attention to a new batch at the serial number.

Defective shielding caused problems

In the LG UltraFine 5K, which Apple exclusively distributes, were in the run up various problems were revealed. Among other things, disturbances caused by a nearby router or WLAN access point indicated a lack of shielding.

LG recommended in the meantime, the router at least 2 meters away from the monitor.

No problems with new version

After the sales stop, the monitor has recently been delivered in a new, error-corrected version. The website 9to5Mac had confirmed the known problems with an older model and in the meantime received from the manufacturer a new model in which the errors no longer occurred.

Neither problems with the connection of a directly connected router (Apple AirPort Extreme), nor with radio speakers (Sonos Play: 5) or the connection of a Thunderbolt 3 cable can be reproduced.

Eyes on when buying

To ensure that the newly purchased LG UltraFine 5K counts as a fault-corrected version, check the serial number. The first three digits of the serial number (S / N) indicated on the back of the monitor as well as on the packaging indicate the date of manufacture.

The revision from 9to5Mac, which has been found to be error-free, begins with the numbers “702” – the “7” stands for the year 2017 and the “02” for the month of February. Caution should be exercised in the case of older batches: the faulty test object was from November 2016 (serial number: “611 ….”).
